Cosinga Dantius Palpatine (82 BBY - )is the first emperor of the Galactic Empire. In his youth known as Cosinga the Younger, Palpatine was born into the noble House Palpatine on the Mid-Rim planet Naboo in the Chommell Sector. After the tragic massacre of his family in a brutal attack by pirates, he went on to become the head of his house and extremely active in first local and later sector politics.
After a period in the Legislative Youth Program, the young Palpatine served as an Ambassador in the office of Chommell Sector Senator to the Galactic Republic. After the assassination of Senator Vidar Kim in 52 BBY, the 31 year old Palpatine mounted an ultimately successful bid in election to replace him. During his tenure as Chommell Sector Senator, Palpatine earned a reputation as a political moderate with a reputation for honesty and even-handed negotiations, as well as an excellent working relationship with the Jedi Order. Though he held back from the pursuit of the most advantageous and sought-after positions of power and appointment, during this time he wrote extensively as well as conducted numerous guest lectures at universities around the Core and Mid-Rim.
During the crisis surrounding the blockade of Naboo, it was Palpatine's senate office that was able to successfully propose a vote of no-confidence in the leadership of then-Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum. In the wake of the Valorum's ouster, the office of Supreme Chancellor was all-but thrust upon Palpatine in 32 BBY, and would again be re-elected for the post after his term expired in 28 BBY. It was during his second term in the office that the Clone Wars would rip apart the Galactic Republic.
The conflict appeared to reveal numerous flaws in the complicated fabric of laws that bound the Republic together. These were generally repaired by consolidating power in the hands of the executive branch embodied by the office of the Supreme Chancellor. These acts, from the Military Creation Act to the Emergency Powers Act, to the Reflex Amendment, and the Sector Governance Decree, served to enhance the power of the office of the Chancellor to heretofore unknown levels.
In the final months of the war a series of calamitous events led to first the physical deformation of the Palpatine himself and later the revelation that the entire Separatist Crisis had been manufactured by the Jedi Order as a plot to usurp political and military control over the Republic. As a final response to the threat of the rampant spread of instability due to the Jedi Insurrection following so closely on the heels of the still raging Clone Wars, the Senate voted overwhelmingly to support the Imperial Reorganization Constitutional Convention and place Supreme Chancellor Palpatine as the lifelong president of that august body.
In 19 BBY, therefore, Cosinga Palpatine was restyled by personal decree Palpatine I, Emperor of the first Galactic Empire.
